It’s no secret that the way social media is used is constantly changing, especially this year. Instagram used to be a platform known for sharing pictures and using vintage filters, and now it has its own separate app and Instagram TV (link to blog about IGTV), which uses only video. The use of video is taking over the internet. From memes to news articles, nearly everything seems to have a video attached to it. In addition to the increasing use of video, we are seeing the rates of users dropping and changing from other social platforms. Here’s what you need to know about current social media trends.
Social Media Past
Back in the day, Myspace was the platform for everyone. But then competition began to grow once advertisers started to spam the site and users demanded a platform that required less maintenance. Users started looking for a new social platform where their friends were that was more organized and there was no need to update profiles. This opened up an avenue for different social platforms to become popular. In the end, Facebook rose to the top of the ranks and became the new leader. Facebook is now many times more successful and profitable than Myspace ever was. However, it can be debated that demographics are beginning to make another shift. Since Facebook’s debut, we have seen the rise of Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, and Snapchat. With all of this competition, could Facebook be nearing its end?
Future of Facebook
Facebook has been in the media lately, dealing with upset users tired of being bombarded by advertisers and spammed with political posts. Facebook is one of the most popular online marketing tools for advertisers. However, if Facebook’s end users decide to leave, the platform will start to see advertisers leave as well. Keep in mind that frustrated Facebook users aren’t leaving the internet; they’re simply turning to other social giants such as Snapchat, Twitter, and Instagram.
